Magic Pierrot was written during spring time, when the pandemic hit France for the first time and put the whole country under lockdown. Back then, Margot and Théo had to return from a trip in Japan and to settle in a new place as they quit their apartment before leaving. In that weird and pleasant period the band started composing new songs, in order to complete their Funtastic album release with bonus tracks for Japan edition.
The song name refers to a small restaurant they stopped at, in the seaside town of Shingu. Travelling through the prefecture of Wakayama, they both felt strange as they were enjoying dreamy landscapes but also observing the crazy situation evolving in France through their smartphones. That day, Magic Pierrot simply shined as a beacon in the darkness, and hosted our travelers for few hours in a caring atmosphere. In the morning, Margot decided to write a song called Magic Pierrot.
The lyrics are tinged with her memories and the simple joy they found in this place. It talks about a person who witnesses the happiness of others and foster jealousy as they don’t know how to reach that state too. Ready for anything, they starts chasing a fast, playful, yellow ball... Production-wise, Tapeworms convey shiny synths and bubbly sound effects more than ever, and follow its path in blending electronic sounds, indie rock energy and pop songwriting. With programmed drums and a gritty synth bass, the sophisticated song structure gives a special place for Margot to tell the story with a soft and bright voice. Inspired by Taeko Ohnuki unique songwriting, heavy-compressed French Touch beats and y2k indie acts as Sweet Trip, the band develops a thrilling and glowy soundscape.
The artwork was made by french set designer Louise Primel, using plush made especially for the song by the Japanese artist Many’s Shop. The dolls were designed as characters allegory of the lyrics and song overall meaning. The music video for the song stars the dolls as main characters while depicting them as Margot’s living friends. Improvised by the band in two days, it reflects the joyous feeling of the song, reminiscent of this place that once was a relief.
Evoking modern malaise with an optimist and touching take on the trouble of finding happiness, Magic Pierrot stands as a real indie pop anthem, and one of the most ambitious song for the band yet.
